WHAT IS AN ENROLLED AGENT?

ea

An Enrolled Agent (EA), is a tax specialist who has demonstrated technical competence and professional ethics to the United States Treasury Department and has been granted authority to represent taxpayers in any tax matter before the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), relating to their rights, privileges, and tax liabilities.

Using an EA can save taxpayers significant time and effort in tax preparation and its associated tasks. EA’s are equipped to advise, represent, and prepare tax returns for individuals, domestic partners, partnerships, corporations, estates, trusts, and any entities with tax-reporting requirements. According to the Treasury Department EA’s are the

” …only federally licensed tax practitioners who specialize in taxation and also have unlimited rights to represent taxpayers before the IRS.”

Many EA’s are members of the National Association of Enrolled Agents (NAEA) and similar state-level organizations such as the Georgia Society of Enrolled Agents (GSEA). Members of NAEA are required to complete a minimum of 30 hours of continuing education each year, while those who are members of the GSEA agree to fulfill 25% more educational requirements, in the interpretation, application and administration of federal tax laws in order to maintain membership in the organization. These requirements surpass the IRS required minimum and ensure that taxpayers who choose to use an EA who is a member of NAEA and GSEA always receive up-to-date guidance reflecting the most recent tax code updates.
